Importance & Significance of Govardhan Shila

Govardhan is a famous spot of Hindu pilgrimage which is situated on a narrow sandstone hill known as Giri Raj (around 8 km long) at around 25 kilometres from Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is said that the young Lord Krishna have held Giriraj up on the tip of a finger for 7 days & nights to shield all the people of Braj from the storm of rain sent down Lord Indra. Bhisma Pitamaha had also narrated the existence/ presence of Govardhan from the Garga Samhita.

Once in Goloka Vrindavana, Lord Krishna told Sri Radharani that she should now appear on the earth as it was the ideal opportunity for them to perform their transcendental pastimes within the material world. Radharani answered that except if Vraja Dhama, the Yamuna & Govardhana Hill were available there, She would not be glad. Then Lord Krishna disclosed to Radharani that She need not stress, as Vraja Dhama, along with the Yamuna & Govardhana Hill had already appeared on the earth.

Govardhan Hill Story/ History Behind Govardhan Shila

Many years before this incident, in the place where there is Salmali dvipa, the spouse of the incredible mountain Oronacal gave birth to a son named Govardhana. At the time of Govardhana birth every one of the diving beings appeared in the sky and showered flowers upon him. The incredible mountains, driven by the Himalayas and Sumeru also came there to offer their regards. They at that point performed parikrama of Govardhana and accepted him as their king. They offered extremely pleasant prayers praising Govardhana for having slipped from Goloka Vrndavana, describing him as the Crown Jewel of Vraja.

A few years later, at the beginning of Satya-yuga, the great sage Pulastya Muni visited Salmali dvipa. After seeing the beautiful Govardhana Hill covered with many lovely creepers, blossoms, rivers, caves & tweeting birds, the sage felt that this hill was capable of giving liberation. Then he went to meet Oronacal, who immediately offered his regards and asked from the sage what service he could render. Pulastya Muni informed Oronacal that he was from Kashi (Banaras) and was on the journey to all the heavenly places. Furthermore, he said that even though the sacred river Ganges flows through Kashi, there is no beautiful hill. He at that point asked Oronacal to give Govardhan to him with the goal that he could perform his austerities sitting on top of the hill. On hearing the sages demand, Oronacal, who was not ready to part with his child, began to shed tears in the thought of partition from his beloved Govardhana.

Govardhan do not want to make Pulastya Muni angry & curse his father so he asked the sage that how he would carry him right to Kashi. Sage answered that he would carry him in his right hand. Govardhana then agreed to go with the sage on one condition - that if he put him down anyplace during the journey, he would not have the option to lift him again and the sage i.e. Pulastya Muni agreed. Carrying Govardhan in his right hand he left for Kasi By the desire of fortune Pulastya Muni passed through Vraja on his way to Kasi. On landing in Vraja, the Govardhan felt that now he was here & he should remain in the blessed Dhama. By his spiritualist power, he was able to influence the sage to take care of the call of nature. Then sage put Govardhan down & headed out to answer the call. But when he returned he was not able to lift Govardhana again.

Thus the anger Pulastya Muni cursed Govardhana to sink into the ground by the measurement of one mustard seed each day. So when Govardhana first came to Vraja in the start of Satya-yuga, he was eight yojanas long (64 miles), five yojanas wide (40 miles} & two yojanas high (16 miles). It is believed that after ten thousand years of the Kali-yuga, Govardhana will totally vanish. It is said that as long as Govardhana Hill and the Yamuna river stayed show, Kali-yuga would not take its full results. Anyone who is blessed enough to hear the depiction of the presence of Govardhana Hill would be liberated from all sins.
