The Samudra Manthan (समुद्रमन्थन) is also known as Sagar Manthan, Amrit Manthan, Ksheer Sagar Manthan. The Samudra Manthan explains the origin of Amrita, the nectar of immortality. Shaligram Shila with Golden flow represents the Nectar. These Shilas are very few on this Universe as wherever the drop of Nectar fell, the Shaligram Shila has absorbed that Nectar and same as becoming a golden flow and emerged out from the Shila.

This Shila is Samundra Manthan Shila. There will be several Akrutis of various Devatas and Demons and the 14 Ratnas that emerged out during this churning of the ocean that can be seen on the Shaligram Shila. 

These Fourteen Ratnas (gems or treasures) divided between asuras and Devatas are as follows:

  • Lakshmi 
  • Apsaras 
  • Varuni or Sura
  • Kamdhenu
  • Kalpavriksha 
  • Airavat, and several other elephants
  • Uchhaishvas
  • Kaustubha 
  • Parijaat
  • Sharanga-A powerful bow(symbolic of the demon's belligerence)
  • Chandra
  • Dhanvantari with Amrita
  • Shankh
  • Halahal, the poison swallowed by Shiva
